gypsy kings
around 100 km west of bucharest, romania lies a small village called buzescu. lost in the middle of wallachia among fields and goats, this tiny place is populated by gypsies who have earned a lot of money and watched MTV cribs on repeat.
they settled here and built what looks like palaces made of greek columns, colorful marble, shiny metal, high towers and generally speaking no architectural rule or clear direction. bentleys meet with horse carriages in the main street, where old people come out to sit down on a bench in front of their property shortly before dusk.
obvious questions may arise regarding the origin of the money or the reasons behind the odd location. i prefer to focus on the architectural style: glitz at its worst or the definition of a new identity?
